STANDARD LAUNDRY PRACTICE:
- Wash grappling clothes the same day you practice. This is the biggest thing to prevent funk build up. If you let clothes sit for a day or two, they will inevitably get a funk to them. Once they have a funk, it's a pain to get rid of.
- Wash on hot. I've had problems washing on cold.
WHEN LAUNDRY GETS FUNKY:
- Kill the funk with uv. This has been the most effective way to get clothes back to fresh out of everything I've tried over the past 7 years. Put them out in the sun for an hour, then flip them to expose the other side and wait an hour, then turn them inside out and let them sit for an hour, then flip upside down for the last side and wait for an hour
- Laundry stripping: many people have recommended this, but I've still found most success with the sun method. You put clothes in tub or a bucket with water and detergent and let soak over night. A lot of the newer high efficiency washing machines don't use enough water to really get everything out each wash.
OTHER LAUNDRY INFO:
- Some people recommend borax, but it's illegal in most of EU for causing reproductive harm, so I don't use it. I have no clue whether or not there's any risk, but it just feels weird so I avoid.
- Some people recommend oxyclean. The main ingredient is sodium percarbonate which you can order on Amazon for a fraction of the price if you want to add to detergent.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU REALIZE YOUR CLOTHES ARE STINKY MID PRACTICE:
- If you realize that your clothes smell, you are welcome to grab loaners from the gym. It happens, and sometimes your clothes smell clean and fresh until you start to sweat in them, and then they suddenly smell musty.
- If you are training with someone who smells stinky, it is a-okay to tell them.
- If someone tells you that your clothes are stinky, there's no stigma to changing them.
There is a stigma to having someone tell you that you smell stinky and deciding to not change into spare clothes or using loaner clothes.
Lastly, if I'm ever stinky, please tell me!
WHAT ABOUT BODY ODOR:
We have travel sized deodorants for sale at the gym in case you forget to put some on and need some.
However, you shouldn’t be coming into the gym already stinky. If you’ve been working out, playing outside, etc.. and sweating, you should shower before you get to the gym and jump on the mats.
