The main coaching methods we use at Golden Jiu Jitsu are concepts/heuristics & systems for positions.
For the most part, I think that studying concepts is a better use of your time. I’m currently working on a more formalized curriculum with full list of concepts that will be taught from for fundamentals classes.
That curriculum is here:
The most important concepts to learn are the mechanics of jiu jitsu. The second most important concepts are more strategy - for example regulated If you understand the basic mechanics of grappling, then you’ll have a well equipped tool belt when problem solving in new positions.
My favorite model for explaining Jiu Jitsu is Rob Biernacki’s ‘Alignment’ model. I’ll include a short written form description for Alignment & it’s 3 components - base, posture, & structure - after the following full list of concepts.
You can learn more directly from Rob Biernacki at bjjconcepts.net (of which I’m a subscriber and really like his coaching section that I use regularly planning classes), and also BJJ Mental Models Podcast (you can find it wherever you listen to podcasts). My favorite podcast on there is actually one with Rob Biernacki on Alignment: https://podcast.bjjmentalmodels.com/243161/2147624
Alignment is what their very first podcast was on, and this was them redoing it trying to make it better.
The current list of concepts I’m working on fleshing out are from Rob Biernacki, who got most of them from Ryan Hall.
